In 1988, the Austrian coin mint was authorized to produce 999.9-ounce gold bullion coins.
After examining a number of possible designs, the decision was made to designate the surface of the coin according to the great tradition of Vienna, classical music, and to call it the Wiener Philharmonic, after the famous Vienna Symphony Orchestra.

The origins of the Austrian Mint go back to 1194 when a mint was established in Vienna to produce pennies from the 35-ton silver ransom paid by England for the release of Richard the Lionheart, who had been captured by the Duke of Austria on his way back from the Third Crusade. It seems that Richard had offended the Austrians during the siege of Acre.

The Mint was relocated to Wollzeile, near St Stephen’s Cathedral, in 1397, and then to Himmelpfortgasse (now the headquarters of the Ministry of Finance) in 1752, and finally to its current home in Am Heumarkt, opposite the Stadtpark, in 1837. Formerly a branch of the Ministry of Finance, since 1989, it has been a public company wholly owned by the Austrian National Bank.
